REMINDER - With the heightened awareness about the swine flu, please remember to stay home when you are sick, especially when you have a fever greater than 100 degrees.  Flu symptoms may include sudden onset of illness, fever higher than 100 degrees, cough, sore throat, chills, headache, muscle aches, weakness, and vomiting.  The flu virus is easily spread through direct contact, coughing, and sneezing.  Prevention is simple.  Wash your hands.  Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.  Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth.  Stay home when you're sick or have flu symptoms.  Weybright  4/28-5/7

 

SPRING ATHLETES:   Grade checks are happening again this week.  Be sure to turn in your homework and get those tests taken so your grades are above failing.   Any athlete on the grade check list may be eliminated from competing in their sport.  KEEP YOUR GRADES UP IF YOU WANT TO PLAY!   Reiber (4/29-30)

 

Juniors and Seniors!  May 5th is the regular deadline for the June 6, 2009 SAT test (This is the Last SAT of the year).  It is wise for all college bound Juniors to take an SAT or ACT at the end of their Junior year.  This is the Final SAT Test Date for this year!  Seniors who need a score for college must take this one!  If you qualify for free or reduced lunch or you are a member of ETS or Upward Bound you qualify for a test fee waiver.  See your counselor or Mr. Winberg or Mr. Finney in student services or at the Harding Center for the fee waiver form or if you need assistance with the registration process  (4/30-5/5)

 

Brenna Hurley competed at the State Horse Bowl, Horse Judging, and Hippology contests this past weekend in Albany.  Her team took 1st place in Horse Judging and will be traveling to Denver in Jan. for nationals.  This may be the first year ever that Coos County has sent a team to nationals.  She also placed 2nd as an individual in Horse Judging.  Congratulations.

 

We will have an assembly in the Auditorium during advisory today.  Students are to report to advisory for roll and then go to the auditorium with their class for the assembly.  After a short performance for all students, 9th & 10th grades will return to their advisory classes; juniors and seniors will stay for a brief time for information on portfolios and prom.  Advisory teachers need to retake attendance when they return to their rooms.

 

The next prom committee meeting will be held next Wednesday, May 6th, at lunch in Room 135.  (4/29-5/6)

 

NEW CLUB:  MHS Guys & Dolls are meeting on Tuesdays and Thursday in the dance room 3:40-5:00 pm.   Show up and learn different swing and ballroom dances:  the Balboa, Lindy-hop, Waltz and many others. No previous dance experience required.  See Mrs. Brown for additional information    (4/21-30)

 

OSU College of Pharmacy will be holding an open house on Friday, May 8th at 3:30pm.  This is an ideal opportunity for prospective students who may have an interest in a pharmacy career and/or applying to OSU's pharmacy program. (Coun., May 8)

 

Stand for Children is offering scholarships to Outstanding Students who "Beat the Odds."  If you are a senior and have succeeded academically despite hardships such as poverty, disability, homelessness or personal tragedy check out this scholarship.  The deadline to apply is Friday, September 18, 2009.  For more information see student services or visit www.standleadershipcenter.org/bto  (Coun., June 3rd)

CONGRATULATIONS to Justin Rodriquez who is our first STATE Champion from MHS  in an individual forensics speaking event!  Also Jamey Moriarty took 4th place in Prose Speaking and Logan Emlet was a semi-finalist in Student Congress.

US AIR FORCE MOBILITY BAND will present a FREE public performance TONIGHT at 7:00pm in our auditorium

 

US AIR FORCE MOBILITY BAND ASSEMBLY will be held on Tuesday, 4/28, during 1st period on a special schedule.  The band will present a selection of good “youth appeal” music which everyone should find enjoyable.   Auditorium assembly student expectations include no food or drink, hats off, cell phones turned off, etc, and students are expected to stand for the National Anthem.  Everyone will need to exit expediently because there is another school performance immediately following this one.  ENJOY!

 

Juniors - The Naval ROTC will be in the library on Tuesday, April 28th during lunch.  Those that are interested should sign up in student services. (Coun., April 28th)

Six members of The Marshfield Times newspaper staff, including Markus Boesl, Jake Crump, Austin Hall, Tyler Klein, Mike Millan and Reine Pavlik, just returned from Phoenix, Arizona where they participated in the national high school journalism convention.  While there they entered one of the staff's newspapers in the Best of Show competition.  The paper earned 7th place.  This is the second year in a row that the newspaper staff has placed in the top 10 and earned national recognition.  Way to go Pirate journalists.  You represented MHS well.

 

In honor of National Library Week (April 18-24) the MHS library is giving a roll of  Smarties to every student who comes in during the week and checks out a book.  Some rules apply – Mrs. Christensen (4/21-24)

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22!!!  All National Honor Society members, Key Club members, and their friends are encouraged to meet in front of the Main Office after school today for a campus clean up.  Gloves and bags will be provided, and we should be done in about an hour.   (Danielson  4/20 - 4/22)

 

PEACEJAM students are having a giveaway of reusable bays during lunch today.  The first 200 people will receive one.  “Good for our environment, good for us!”   Thanks to Fred Meyer and WalMart  (Yasana  4/22)

 

**All Z Club Girls**      Z Club will be meeting this Thursday the 23rd, during lunch in the West Gym.  We will be having pizza and candy while we discuss our last fun event of the year!!!  Don't miss this meeting and bring your friends so you can be part of the planning.  See you there!!
