The Marshfield Chess Team traveled to Sutherlin High School Saturday. Varsity players Roth Riley, Eithan Smith, Nick Berglund, Shawn Hutchinson, and Katelyn Traschel all had strong games in defeating Sutherlin 3.5 to 1.5 and shutting out Oakland High School 5-0. The short-handed JV team defeated Sutherlin and Oakland 2 to 1 with outstanding efforts by Albert Lopez, TJ Martin-Lokey, and Sunset 8th grader Michael Stephens. Both teams are now in second place in the Southern Oregon Chess League with 3-1 records. The Chess Team is looking to avenge its only league loss to nationally-ranked Coquille High School when the Red Devils visit "OUR HOUSE" on January 10th. Tickets are still available for this big matchup, though they are going fast. Get yours today! (Stephens)
