The MHS Chess Team traveled to Coquille High School for a multi-school tournament on Saturday to kick off its 2008-09 chess season. With only one returning player this year, Brandon Monroe, the Team faced strong competition throughout the day. When the dust settled, the MHS Chess Team finished second place behind a experienced and talented Coquille team. Individual honors went to Alyshia Fox for 1st place in the 11th-12th grade division, and to Jordan Meeker for 2nd place in the same division. Other MHS chess team members who had very good showings included Caleb McGinnis, Roth Riley, Eithen Smith, Nick Berglund, and Katelyn Trachsel. Even chess advisor Mark Stephens got in on the act going 3-0 and taking first place against other coaches in the adult division. Stop by Room 220 at lunch to hear stories of the day, and perhaps challenge some our talented chess players to a match (Stephens).
